I have a lot of memories of English with RP. His lessons were unique - there'd be plenty of English, but plenty of everything else as well, and somehow everything was weaved together in a way that made sense to a room of 12 year olds. Lots of things stick in the memory: his passion for history and politics (somehow Stalin, Big Bertha, and the consequences of joining the Euro were all part of the year 7 curriculum), his regular distribution of Refresher sweets (to alleviate low classroom 'refreshment levels'), his love of Harold Pinter (and a bold, perhaps overly-ambitious attempt to stage The Caretaker...), his fury when he ordered a new edition of 'Kes' that had been 'Bowdlerised' with the removal of a key expletive. I'd love to track down that booklet we were all given crammed with literary terms that were regarded as essential to our education, complete with homegrown, humorous definitions. 'Zeugma' anyone?! For him, teaching was about preparing us for adulthood and expanding our horizons well beyond the confines of prep school life. He left a genuine, lasting impact on those lucky enough to be taught by him. I hope he knew that! Michael Peet (Pilgrim's 2002-2005)
